A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal.A codec encodes a data stream or signal for transmission, storage or encryption, or decodes it for playback or editing. Codecs are used in videoconferencing, streaming media and video editing applications. A video camera’s analog-to-digital converter (ADC) converts its analog signals into digital signals, which are then passed through a video compressor for digital transmission or storage. WebM is an open media file format designed for the web. Its files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The file structure is based on the Matroska media container. A key factor in the web’s success is that its core technologies such as HTML, HTTP, and TCP/IP are open and freely implementable.
